8th Reflections

LAST REFLECTION ! WHO'S THE BEST AMONG THE BEST ? Hmmmm ~

Yes, you're reading my final reflections for this course, i bet you're gonna miss me when im gone πŸ˜ Im glad that i managed to finished this assignments, and i'm very proud of myself that i had improve my teaching skills .

So, this is our last task : From the mock teaching session you have seen, choose one which you think is the best. Reflect on the following aspects: teacher role in managing the students, managing the lesson, the teaching method, the lesson-content and the two more aspects to reflect. (to be written after you have seen all)

Hmmm.. so the winner ... goes to ...... Jen !

Unfortunately i wasn't in the picture πŸ˜’

  • The reason why i choose her because i found that she's being very nice in teaching her students, she gives clear explanation to all of us. One thing that i like about her is she turns the lesson to be enjoyable and fun by playing games at the first minute ! Tbh, on that time i started to felt sleepy and losing focus, but she manage to wokes me up :)

  • She was able to manage the lesson well. Eventhough we're making too much noice she arbitrates in a good way. There's one of my friend came late to class, but what i see is she's still welcoming her politely, it's just that she advised her not to be late again in a proper way.

  • Her teaching method is quite impressive too, she gives us some activities to answer her questions. As i remember she's using the scan QR code for us to recognize the shape behind the object either it is polygon or not. It's like something new for me, nobody had done it before as i know. cool right?

  • The lesson content is sufficient. It is not too much, and she provides a clear explanation about how to recognize polygons to us. She's using mnemonics to make it easier to memorize such as Octagon has 8 sides = Octopus (has 8 legs) See how creative she is ?! She also gives us a real object to describe the polygons shape.

  • Moreover, i think her PowerPoint is exciting and also effective ! It was simple, less sentence, she put many shapes so it won't be looked bored, good contrast and many else. She also talk freely when explaining her lesson without reading from the slides.

  • And lastly, i think you're the best because you are so creative in approaching your students. She also include emoji for us to rate how satisfied we are towards her  lesson and how deep our understanding is. It shows that she is very concern about our understanding.

That's all, so long my friend πŸ˜‰

My Mock Teaching ✌

Finally ! last but not least, i've done my mock teaching as the 3rd presenter hahha ! Thank goodness everything went well even that was my very first experience ! Okay, continue your reading πŸ˜‰

Hello class ! today i'll be your new English teacher, you may call me Madam Anis wakaka

After our Mock Teaching, we are assigned to reflect our own mock teaching:
1)How the lesson went in general.
2)What i  would do differently.
3)What went wrong.
4)What i liked about the lesson.
5)If the activities and class dynamic reflected my teaching principles.
6)What i learned in the process.

1) How the lesson went in general.

For me, i am very glad that i've made it. I've tried my very best on that day facing my biggest fear which is lack self-confident :p Luckily my classmates or should i say my "students" are very supporting, even they look childish pretending as a form 1 students but still participate well during the lesson. To be honest, they look so cute ! When the time i played a video of Prepositions song, they were all singing. At the end of the class, we played a game which is "Time Rush" The situation turns wild hahaha they were all trying their best to convince the guesser about what is the object behind (on the screen)

wish i could have this kind of students later πŸ˜‚

2) What i would do differently.

If i could turn back time, i would fix my mistake in showing them the video. on that day, our lecturer gives some comments to each of us, she told me that when it comes to showing a video, RELATE IT. I do realise my mistake that i just showed them the video and move to the next topics. I supposed to connect it with the topic, like one of my friend did very well. She played a song of her lesson then she create a dance for it. Interesting right? I should be more creative in teaching.

3) What went wrong.

There are few problems on that day, the first one is i didn't alert with my time as i planned in my lesson plan during the lesson. But yeah, i'll take note that, thankyou Dr.Ng πŸ˜Š

- Second is i putting too much information to teach in a single period, which is overload! i wasn't supposed to do that. I cannot put lots of topic in a short time, students won't be able to catch it that fast right? I'll make sure, i won't repeat the same mistakes when it comes to my teaching practicum later.

- And lastly about the video as i said earlier.

4) What i like about the lesson.

I found that what i liked the most about the lesson is the game part! Everyone were participating in the game. It's very funny to see them acting to visualize the objects rushingly because they were only given 3 minutes only! Take a look for this video πŸ‘‡

5) If the activities and class dynamic reflected my teaching principles.

I would say yes, because my teaching principles is simple, a good teacher will provide a good learning. I believe that kind of activites will be work in teaching in class. I also belive that, once you get to liked your teacher, you will be willingly to learn what had been taught by them.

6) What i learned in the process?

I learned a lot! I also learned how to confront with my nervous. This is something rare for me, and a great experience. I will try to improve myself from time to time. I also learned that to be an excellent educator, i have to be dare accepting challenges! Being a teacher was not an easy job, it takes many sacrifices to succeed, like the quote says "no pain no gain". At first i was having difficulties in creating lesson plan, but then as i learned and keep on doing it, i finally understand how to do it well.

I also learned how to educate other people. Since this was  my first time, i learned that in order to educate students you have to speak with loud voice, be confident, fine alternatives to approach the students, and the most important thing is, i learned that a learning session have to be interesting and joyful ! It will encourage the students to learn with enthusiasm.

Thats all. Bye bye πŸ‘‹

6th Reflections

My preparation for my mock teaching ?

Few days left before our mock teaching day ! Oohh God ! To be honest, this is my baddest nightmare since the first day I knew it was one of our assignments.  Well .. actually imma sort of lack self confident person when it comes to talk infront of many peoples, but yeahh I have to take this opportunity as my challenge and preparation as a teacher to be hihi ^^

I always believe in this quote “Face your fear, you are braver than you think” yeah it was since I was in secondary school.. I don’t remember whose quoted it, I just saw it in the internet long time ago.

Back to the TOPIC: what is your preparation for your mock teaching?

  •  I already decided my topic for my upcoming mock teaching which is about “Preposition”
  • Yepp, my lesson plan already done, slides? Hehe still working on it (see how procrastinating I am :P)
  • Already look up elements that need to be include into my slides
  • I’ve list down abt how to prepare a good slides in my notepad (based on what our lecturer taught us)
  • Actually yesterday I tried to do my pre-mock teaching (practicing) with my roommates haha poor them cause they have to listened to me for about half an hour 😝it was like over & over again ~
  • And last but not least, pray to god. Wish everything will be just fine later amin ..

Well.. that’s it ! very short for this time right?

Btw, have you seen this video ? Faded cover song by Sara Farell πŸ‘‡ trust me, her voice from heaven πŸ‘Œ

5th Reflections

This time our task is about “Choose one set of PowerPoint from ‘internet’, then ‘fix it!” but “if you think the PowerPoint do not needed to be fixed, explain why with 4 reasons”

So.. I’ve been looked up for sets of bad PowerPoint from the internet, it’s quite a lots actually but I found that this one is the worst ever I guess haha

-          Okay , as you can see from the title above, they put “My presentation” as the title. It’s obviously wrong ! it should be the actual title of the topic, for example “Woodland Park Zoo Seatle WA” .

To be honest, I can’t even understand what are the main topic the presenter was trying to tell. Therefore this kind of slides has to be avoided. The use of the background color is not interesting and actually more like boring for students.

-          The second slides it should be simple. Too much words in there, the slides must have plenty of "white space" or "negative space". Use keywords only, no sentences. Therefore, the presenter should never read the whole sentences from the slides when presenting. It all should be spontaneously.

The slides are only for supports, not to replace the  talk because if you read your slides and if you do it slow and badly, the audience will get bored and stop listening.

-          I guess the third slides the presenter is about to visualize the Zoo. Therefore, besides of putting lots of inappropriate cartoon images to describe the zoo, it should be replaced with the Zoos environment images. And also, it should be arrange properly so that it won’t be too crowded.

-        The fourth slides, the presenter was trying to list down some of the good ideas for upgrading the Zoo. The main point should be very clear such as “Ideas for Upgrading the Zoo”. The use of consistency is also important, the fonts should be in the same sizes on all slides, and can be read easily.

From the word “Ideas” it should be more than one ideas, but from the slide as we can see they only put one only.

-

-          Next, the use of images as the background is not suitable. The images distracting the messages, plus the fonts of the messages is too small and in white color. It should be contrast, If you want to play with colors, keep it easy on the eyes and always keep good contrast in mind so that your readers do not have to strain to guess what you’ve typed on your slide

-          The information of the charts above is not clear. It should be labeled clearly. Plus, you can also put some animation to make it more interesting.

-          Lastly, to conclude a presentation it has to be some of the conclusion. Not just by putting some random pictures and say thank you.

Okay that's it ! see ya on the next reflections πŸ‘‹

4th Reflection.

Hey waddup ?
its my 4th reflection already ! And you know what ? there are fews days left for our mock teaching ! I am so dead!! really need to prepare myself since Im the third presenter (bcoz my name starts from A 😒 why mom whyyyyy!)

And again I was absent to class. But this time it is because im  taking care of my niece which is only 6y/o. Actually her mom was warded in the hospital due to affected by dengue, and her father was in outstation on that time so I have to replace their responsibility of taking care of my niece. But luckily she’s recovering now and her husband came back already, thank goodness 😊

My friends told me that they were learning about :

Yeah.. you know lesson plan is very important to be a teacher. It is a teacher's detailed description of the course or "learning trajectory". It is developed by teachers to guide class learning. We need to have goals about what are the students supposed to learn. We need to have plans before educating people, you can’t just came to class and teach bla3x without planning. Then it won’t be an effective learning session. To conclude,  lesson plan is the teacher's guide to run a particular lesson.

So, for our 4th reflection task we are assigned to "design my own structure of lesson plan"

So as you can see this is one of the lesson plan template. To make it clear, imma gonna explain it to you okay?

Form/class, subject, topic, date and time are required to be filled.

Level of proficiency: To measure the difficulty level of the lesson should be.There are 5 categories, such as Beginning level, Early intermediate, Intermediate, Early Advanced, Advanced.

for example the begining level, teachers can teach the basic topics such as nouns, "nouns is a word which names a person, things, place or animals. Person = a girl, baby, Robinson Crusoe"

Background Knowledge: Refers to what the students have been taught in previously.

Learning Objective: The goals of the teacher about what the students are going to be taught. i think 1 or 2 are good enough.

Learning Outcomes: The students achievements. Learning outcomes are the statements that specify what learners will know as the results. It Should be more than the learning objectives.

Values: It the moral values that can came out from the lesson.

Teaching Aids: Are the tools/apparatus used by the teacher that can help the learners improve their learning academic. For example flash cards, blackboard, LCD Projector.

Teaching and learning approaches: Teachers should list down new teaching and learning approaches to make the lesson be more interesting, instead of the conventional times where students just listen and absorbs all the information from the teacher. it supposed to be more fun.

example: Mentor mentee

KBKK: Stands for "Kemahiran Berfikir Secara Kritif dan Kreatif" and also known as Critical and Creative Thinking Skills to instill in learners nowadays.

So as you can see there's explaination about certain part from the picture above (information, verification, activity)

Summary: To conclude what had happen during learning session. Teachers can include additional notes to improve their teaching skills and fix their weaknesses.

Well yeah ! that's all, really need deep sleep right now (5 more minutes before 3am) πŸ˜‚

its kinda funny but true right? Sometimes we need a life too even as a student πŸ˜‚ but manage your time wisely okay baby 😏

Monday, 20 March 2017

Hey there peeps ! You know what ? I was really stress up lately, you know students life too many things to think plus my lappy didn’t cooperate well and running super duper slow urghh ! It keeps lagging aIl the time ! think I need a new one hehe I’ll tell my dad later :P I was supposed to finish this third reflection on last week but yeah you know, I told ya already

i believe that all of you have experienced your school life time right, i just found this picture in google which is quite interesting, so what kind of teacher you want to be in future? if me, i prefer to be the last one 😝 nahh kidding !

On 7th March is our class, but unfortunately our lecturer didn’t managed to lecture us on that day, she postponed it on the next day due to unavoidable reason I guess. We had discussed about “NAVIGATING THE BUMPY ROAD TO STUDENT CENTERED INSTRUCTION” in class. It’s about conventional student’s experiences of adapting  learning by their own in student centered educations and the obstacles in teaching conventional students.

And this time, we’re assigned to:
“ Suggest 2 methods to solve 4 selected issues from 11 listed highlighted in the article”.

1) If I spend time in class on active learning, I’ll never get through the syllabus.

It is not really necessary to spend lots of time by teaching in class, by giving questions for them to answer either individually or in a small group is better than taking more times to transcribe the course one by one in class. Plus, it helps educators to finish the syllabus faster and also can enhance their thinking skills to solve the questions that given.

Next, spend class time only by explaining the most difficult part of the notes and leaving the students to cover the rest for themselves. Because nowadays, during teaching and learning process it is not the same as the conventional time where students just been given and absorb information from the educator, active learning are more to encouraging students to be proactive.

2) If I don’t lecture, I’ll lose control.

Some students are good in accepting SCI learning method but some students are having difficulty by getting past the negativity and keep on complaining what are the main purpose for them to learn that certain topics. An educator have to take some times to explain them the reason why they have to learn that topics and relate the real situation in real life that they might have to face in future.

Instead of teaching, an educator must know how to entertain students. The point is to attract their attention so that they won’t be too stress up and keep on complaining. The learning session supposed to be interesting.

3) If assign homework, presentation or projects to groups, some students will “hitchhike” getting credit for work in which they did not actively participate.

This keeps happen whenever they were given group assignment. Some students are just getting free ride and did not participate in the group  task. To overcome this situation, educators have to monitor their work done, one by one and make sure that everyone will participate. Meanwhile there will be no chance for them to escape.

Next, lectures role play. Educators should decide which topic to be given to each students eventhough it is a group assignment. It is to ensure that they were doing their work individually and also can encourage them working together by having discussion to each other.

4) When I tried active learning in one of my classes, many of the students hated it. Some refused to cooperate and made their hostility to the approach and to me very clear.

Try to persude the students by playing games and relate it with the topic that they were learning. it will encourage their participation and also avoid their bordness.

Giving some break time for them in teaching. Based on my experience as a students I do understand that sometimes we might feel very tired, so give them some space. So that they won’t be too pressure.

okay thank you muah 😘

2nd Reflection

Well hello there ! welcome back J so as you can see from the top topic,  imma gonna share about my second reflections about Pedagogy in education. Hope you don’t get bored of me hihi

At the end of this February is our Pedagogy  class. So on that day, Dr. Ng told us to read the TOTTO CHAN story as an additional knowledge to us. Plus I believe that in order to improvise my English  (since im planning to majoring in Language and Literature) I have to read a lots so that I can learn new words.

After that she taught us that to be an excellent educator, a teacher has to know how to approach to their students, it’s because every students came from different background. We cannot teach them the way we learn, we have to try to teach them the way they can learn. Eventhough you have lots of students you have get to know each of them. But not to close with them because there are ethical rule to be followed in school stated that a teacher are not allowed to have a relationship with students. This could be an advantages for me when doing my teaching practicum later right ?

Next, she also taught us that there are many ways to get approach with students such as:
  • You have to acknowledge about how students learn, never point out students behaviors if they did not paying attention but ask them questions instead to know whether they are focus or not. And while asking questions, ask randomly.
  •  Do not ask the same person over and over again, it should be diversity when you’re calling.
  • By giving rewards for their achievements instead of punishment when they failed to answer the questions.
  • Attract students attention by relating the subjects that they learn with what they are interested to, such as relating the actresess of Korean drama as a character in teaching. (quite interesting right?)
  • How to deal with students bad behavior? Simple, just drag them to the deciplinary teachers. Easy.

She shared many useful tips with us in teaching, thankyou Dr.Ng J

But then, after teaching us a lessons she gave us a task to find 10 things that students do not want the educators to do.

BEFORE THAT ! have you watch this movie ? “Bad Teacher” if you haven’t yet then you MUST ! Trust me it’ll makes you laugh all the time, but still contains moral value πŸ˜‰

This is based on my previous experience in school hahaha  (evil laugh) 😈

1) Being annoyed.
- Teachers that didn't gave a chance for students to give their opinions.

2) Teachers are not allowed to used harsh words towards students.
- As a teacher, they need to be professional in solving students deciplinary problems instead of using harshwords towards them, that will make students demoralized.

3) Too stern.
- A teacher should not be too stern towards students, he/she supposed to be tolerate and understanding to them. It is because, some of the students might be afraid to give out their opinion they are not willing to study and also they will lose their intrest in study.

4) Do not give too many exercisess/homework.
- Students might be stress up, and there are big possibilities they will not going to finish their task. They prefer to be given a task in class, so that the teacher can guide them and discuss the answers together. Plus they can spend their ample time with family and get enough rest.

5) Favoritism.
- Teachers should avoid favoritism in class, like keep on calling the same persons to answer the questions. This will make the some of the students take it for granted. They didn't want to think to solve the questions because won't be asked. So they just depending on other students.

6) Lessons from text book alone.
- Just teaching the students what is dictated in the text causes boredom. Also they will miss many things like experimenting what they learned, projects and assignments. It should be entertaining to attract students attention.

7) Yelling.
- Most of the students hate being scolded infront the others, this will cause them to slowly dislike the teacher and may result in distrust too.Students will more listen to you, when you speak in a normal voice.

8) Sit Down during entire class.
- Sitting down through an entire class is just not appropriate. This will lead to boredom to students, and believe me, some of the students will fall asleep during class at the back side.

9) Correcting students frequently.
- It is okay to correct your students on the spot while they were talking, but not too frequently. Because this will lead to embarassment to them. It's better to write down mistakes during the exercise and then give them corrections after they finish speaking.

10) Don't read while teaching.
- This keep happens in history subject, most of teachers prefer to read instead of explaining it effectively such as using the white board and write short notes instead of reading all of those paragraph. The students might lose their interest and will get bored.

I guess, that's it. see ya on the next reflection ! Leave your comments and thoughts, i will reply it as soon as i can 😊

My first class Reflection !

Tuesday, 21 February 2017.

Hye there! Yeah me again πŸ‘€ just wanted to share my 1st reflection of Pedagogy in Education to you all.

Today I didn’t managed to attend class due to having stomachache (diarrhea) 😞 I bet you know how it feels right πŸ˜† Eventhough I missed the class, my friend “Malar” still told me what happened in class. On that day, our lecturer asked about the forums tasks that had been given to us and then she discussed the answers together in class. She also asked each person one by one  based on what they understand about What is Pedagogy means & School of Thought Theory as we are assigned to read that theory. She wanted all of them to participate and be supportive in class. And to be honest, I know how does it feel to be asked even when you know the answer but you’ll get nervous till you cannot explain it clearly right?πŸ˜‚ It keeps happen a lot to me! And even sometimes you might be feel like ghoosebumps till your hands turns cold as ice! Okay that’s too much back to the topic 😜 After that Dr. Ng taught them about the Pedagogy definition and also the theory of School Of Thought.

yepp ! Its me (the yellow one), Malar (in the middle) and Fizy (the sarawakian!) Big thanks to Malar for telling me all of this informations muahh πŸ’‹

So lets talk about the topic. What is Pedagogy? Pedagogy is actually a method and practice of teaching and learning. Which means that there are lots of teaching and learning styles can be used as a guidance for me when I become a teacher one day amin.. Next is The School of Thought, there are 3 main points in this theory, Cognitive School of Thought,  Humanistic School of Thought and Behavioral School of thought.

These are the charactheristics each of School of Thought:

v  Cognitive School of Thought.
-  πŸ‘‰Study about what goes inside our head when we are learning.
-  πŸ‘‰ Information processing : The study of how we mentally take in and store information and then retrieve it when needed

-  πŸ‘‰ Beliefs about attention :
  >  Learning experiences should be as pleasant and satisfying as possible
b> Beliefs about short-term and long term memory
  > Beliefs about the memory process.

-  πŸ‘‰  Meaningful learning:
   >  Reception learning (eg:present information clearly/involve learners during presentation)
  > Reciprocal teaching (A form of teaching wherein the teacher gradually shifts teaching responsibility to learners)
   > Problem solving.

v  Humanistic School of Thought.
πŸ‘‰Having good feelings about oneself and others is essential to positive personal development.
-  πŸ‘‰ Humanistic Approaches to Teaching:
     > Inviting School Success
     > Values Clarification
     >  Moral Education
     >  Multiethnic Education

v  Behavioral School of Thought.
-      πŸ‘‰ Study about surrounding affected the learners behavior.
-      πŸ‘‰  Contiguity
-      πŸ‘‰Classical Conditioning
-      πŸ‘‰ Operant Conditioning
-      πŸ‘‰Social Learning

Unfortunately, it was such a waste to missed a class. Even I still get some of the informations but it still has the limitation. So that’s all for now,  stay tuned for the next upcoming blog 😊. Lots of  πŸ’—

Always believe in yourself ✌
